Located in West Kansas City, Missouri, "The Bottoms" was to be the location at which we designed our project. Given three choices of which site to design I chose the site highlighted in red. Located at the intersection of West 12th and Hickory Streets the site provides a nice balance between pedestrian and vehicular traffic. I believe compared to the other two sites this site in particular is the best location for a new modern architecture promoting the revitalization of the area.
In the previous project we were only focusing on the first level of a system and now it was time to move on to a scale that would cover a four story structure. We were, once again, given the opportunity to change the system that we were working with. Since, I was alright fascinated with the metal panels, I decided to stick with them and refine my idea to work on a larger surface. I knew I was working with too many ideas, so I decided it was time to choose and explore the possibilities with more restriction. I decided that I would get rid of the solid panels and design a panel system based on the idea of a sunscreen. My thought behind this was that the interior would receive natural light no matter what function the interior space served; and that the sun screen panels would serve as the barrier between public and private. I couldn’t just drop the idea of an undulating surface, so I decided to make it a little more simple and switched to an orthogonal design that would somewhat mimic the undulations giving the surface life. Along with this I decided that I would attempt to fall within the guild lines of creating a system that could be repeated. In doing so, I designed four different bays, which could be repeated in different arrangements depending on the purpose of interior space. Along with this idea I thought that if the interior building was going to be a sunscreen system over a curtain wall back up I would need to adapt the angles of the screens to serve as shading devices for when the screen was no longer percent. This would allow for a barrier between public and private to be removed. The following pictures display my ideas after working through this whole process.
